Winstone’s Sidmouth opened its doors in 2014 in a truly stunning seaside location.

With a rich literary heritage, this beautiful coastal town in Devon inspired the likes of Jane Austen, Beatrix Potter, and R.F. Delderfield among others. The shop is situated on bustling High Street, just a hop, skip and a jump from the sea.

Our carefully selected range of over 8,000 titles will delight holiday makers and residents alike, and we are well-known for our beautiful range of cards and gifts. If you’re visiting this beautiful part of the world, our extensive range of local books and walking guides will help you get the best out of your travels!

If you can’t find the book you're looking for, then our next-day ordering service means we can have pretty much any book ready for collection by lunchtime the following day.

We adore our four-legged friends (we just wish they could read!) and happily welcome well-behaved dogs into the store.

We look forward to giving you the warmest of welcomes. And you can expect to leave with a smile, and a book (or five) tucked under your arm (but no sand between your toes).

Meet the team

Fraser

Fraser has been a keen reader since childhood. He started his bookselling career in 1988 in Windsor, after a stint as a journalist in South Africa. Windsor benefitted from Fraser’s expertise for 25 years, in which he helped to set up the literary strand of the Windsor Festival, on his way to the Winstone’s Sidmouth team where he has been ever since.

"Some of my earliest memories are of my mother reading to me and visits to the local libraries. Books were my constants throughout school.  A safe place from other children, a defence, a place where I fitted in. Books are the ink of my life, bookselling the colour. The page of my life, now dog-eared and curling at the edges, is thus ornamented and made distinct".

  • Adriana

"Under the sunny skies of Australia, my fair skin found refuge in books that took me on adventures far beyond our shores. They fuelled my desire to travel and continue to provide escape, comfort and knowledge. In Middlemarch, my favourite book, Dorothea inspires me to be a better person".

  • Denise

“The first book that enthralled me was The Magician’s Nephew and I couldn’t wait to slink off to a quiet corner and return to its magical pages. That’s the beauty of books - they can transport you anywhere, and you don’t even have to leave the sofa. As my book-tower can testify, authors make great companions, always ready to take you by the hand and show you something new.”

  • Hannah

Hannah is a native Sidmouthian having lived here all her life. There’s nothing she loves more than a big delivery of new books into the store. It’s like Christmas morning every time! She buys more books than she has time to read in a lifetime but is a firm believer that you can never have too many.

  • Priya

"I started at Winstone’s in 2016, and I am immensely proud to have watched us grow, and to still be part of the team. Having always found solace through reading – especially coming of age stories, Greek mythology, and young adult literature – here in Winstone’s, I have met kindred spirits with whom I share a common love. I return to the same books again and again, and find something new each time, for isn’t a book a kind of home?"
